Namepicker common name

I am trying to use the name picker to give me the common name.

Trying to use some of the code in here http://www-10.lotus.com/ldd/nd85forum.nsf/0/d355d7099cad418e852576f600759b02?OpenDocument
But I can't figure it out. Is this the way I should be doing it, with a converter?
